Oily Skin and Adult Acne Causes

Oily skin and adult acne causes frustration to a large majority of the adults. Fortunately, there are ways to minimize this problem for most people. There are four main causes for acne:

1. Bacteria - We all have good bacteria on our skin which helps to protect our skin from harmful bacteria. When oil gets trapped in our pores, this good bacteria begins to grow inside the pore causing irritation and inflammation to the skin.

Tip #1 - Use products that contain Benzoyl Peroxide. Benzoyl Peroxide kills bacteria and it also speeds up our skin's natural renewal process which helps to clear pores faster than would otherwise happen.

Tip #2 - Do not touch your face! Our hands are full of bacteria. When you wash your face, it is best to use a soft facial cloth as opposed to using your hands. If you must touch your face, be sure to wash your hands first.

Tip #3 - Keep your brushes clean. Be sure to wash any cosmetic brushes you may use at least once a week. When brushes aren't cleaned regularly, dirt and bacteria can build up on them which you will then brush on your face. Not good!

Tip #4 - Ask your dentist if you may need to use Peridex. Peridex is used to kill bacteria in your mouth. I had a few persistant acne spots on my chin that cleared right up once I started using Peridex. I don't have scientific proof - but in my case, it seemed as if the bacteria which was causing gingivitis was also causing some acne.

2. Hormones - Our skin contains sebaceous glands, which produce oil in order to keep our skin hydrated. Hormonal changes such as menstrual cycles, puberty, peri-menopause, etc. can cause our bodies to produce excess levels of these hormones (androgens), which in turn causes excess oil production.

Tip #5 - Take birth control pills. The hormones in pill can can help stop acne from forming. Be patient, though, as the pill can take several months to work.

Tip #6 - Try to minimize stress. Stress can also cause our adrenal glands to produce more androgens.

3. Heredity - There isn't much you can do about this one. If acne tends to run in your family, then you are at greater risk to struggle with it as well. But don't stress about it - because that'll just cause more breakouts! :)

4. Irritants and Allergies - It is important to keep your skin clean. You need a skin care routine which is non-comedogenic and will clean all of the oil, dead skin cells, and other debris out of the entire pore.

Tip #7 - Be sure to use good quality skin care products . Using cheap or ineffective products can cause more bacteria to form on your skin, making it even worse than using nothing at all!

Tip #8 - Seek professional help! The vast majority of acne cases can be solved or at least lessened at home. If you suffer from a severe case of acne, however, you would be wise to see a dermatologist. The longer you wait, the more chance that you will have scarring from your acne.
